Kiriwina Island, PNG

One of the Trobriand Islands, Kiriwina sits well off the usual cruise path. Local culture here is extraordinarily intact, with traditional woodcarving and weaving still central to daily life. Ships anchor offshore and tenders bring you in. Give yourself time ashore rather than rushing back early.

Alotau, PNG

Alotau sits at the tip of Milne Bay, an area with deep Second World War history and some of the most biodiverse coral reefs on earth. The town is relaxed and easy to explore on foot. A guided tour out to the battle sites puts the Pacific War in sharp perspective.

Rabaul, PNG

Rabaul was buried under volcanic ash in 1994 and never fully rebuilt, which makes it one of the more surreal ports in the Pacific. The volcano is still active and very much visible. Hot springs, war tunnels, and the shell of the old town make for a fascinating few hours ashore.

Mystery Island, Vanuatu

Mystery Island is an uninhabited strip of sand in the Aneityum group, and the Westerdam anchors just offshore. The snorkelling directly off the beach is some of the most accessible in Vanuatu, with clear shallow water over healthy coral. Local vendors set up along the shore selling carvings and weavings, making it a surprisingly rich few hours for such a small place.

Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island

Most people visit Kangaroo Island by ferry or fly-drive, so arriving by cruise ship already feels different. Penneshaw is a small, unhurried town and a good base for the island’s highlights: Seal Bay, Flinders Chase, and the local producers who have quietly built a serious food scene over the past decade.

MS Westerdam – Ship Overview

Westerdam is a Vista-class ship carrying around 1,968 passengers, which puts it in a comfortable middle ground: large enough to offer genuine variety, small enough that you’re not queuing for everything. It has been sailing for Holland America since 2004 and was last in dry dock in early 2023. At 42 nights, you’ll have plenty of time to find your favourite spots on board.

Dining

The main Dining Room handles breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a traditional, unhurried style that suits long voyages well. For something more focused, the Pinnacle Grill serves steakhouse classics and regional seafood, Canaletto covers Italian, and Tamarind works through Southeast Asian, Chinese, and Japanese dishes. Morimoto By Sea, the newer addition from chef Masaharu Morimoto, brings a sharper, more modern edge to the speciality dining lineup.

Entertainment

The World Stage runs production shows with live music, bold staging, and a changing programme across the voyage. Billboard Onboard is a popular nightly drawcard, built around a two-pianist format covering decades of pop and rock that tends to fill seats quickly. The Rolling Stone Rock Room adds another live music option for those who want something with a bit more edge after dinner.

Wellness

The Greenhouse Spa covers the essentials well: massage, facials, a thermal suite, and a hydrotherapy pool. The fitness centre is a decent size for a ship this age, with a separate aerobics studio alongside the main gym floor. If you’re happy to book treatments early in the voyage, availability is rarely a problem on a 14-night crossing.

MS Westerdam Cabins

Westerdam’s staterooms run from compact inside cabins through to the 1,290 square foot Pinnacle Suite, so there’s a sensible range for a voyage of this length. Most passengers on a long sailing choose a verandah cabin, and it’s easy to see why: having your own outdoor space matters a lot more when you’re at sea for six weeks. Suite guests get access to the Neptune Lounge, which adds a private concierge, complimentary laundry, and a quiet space away from the rest of the ship.
