Perth is quietly becoming one of Australia’s best cruise departure points, and the 2026 to 2028 seasons have Western Australians genuinely well catered for. Sailings from Fremantle run north to the Kimberley, across to Southeast Asia, and south along the Bight — no flying east required. If you’ve been waiting for the right itinerary to leave from home soil, there’s plenty worth looking at.

What To Know Before You Book

  • Getting to the terminal is changing in 2026. The Fremantle Traffic Bridge closed in February 2026 for up to 12 months while a new crossing is built. If you’re driving in or being dropped off, allow extra time and check current traffic conditions beforehand. The train to Fremantle Station is a reliable alternative, and a free shuttle runs between the station and the passenger terminal on turnaround days. Note also that the pedestrian bridge from the terminal car park over the rail line is currently not accessible, so factor in a slightly longer walk via the level crossing on Peter Hughes Drive.
  • You can’t leave your car at the terminal. The drop-off area in front of the Fremantle Passenger Terminal is exactly that. Long-term parking is available at Victoria Quay Zone 3 (near C and D Sheds) at around AU$12 per day, capped at 7 days, but it’s unshaded and in demand. For longer sailings, secure covered parking is available at Kings Square Car Park on Henderson Street.
  • Timing affects what’s available to you. The Kimberley itineraries run in the cooler months (roughly May to October), while coastal runs down to Adelaide and across to the east coast tend to cluster in the shoulder seasons. Summer departures (December to February) are popular with families but balcony cabins go faster. If your dates are flexible, travelling outside WA school holidays generally means more cabin choice.
  • Fremantle sailings often involve more sea days than departures from the east coast. Because Perth sits so far from the next major Australian port, you’ll typically clock a couple of full days at sea before reaching Adelaide or making your way up to Exmouth or Broome. That’s genuinely enjoyable if you like the rhythm of life onboard, but worth knowing if you’re expecting a port-heavy itinerary.
  • Itinerary availability for 2027 and 2028 is still filling out. Cruise lines tend to release schedules in stages, and some of the sailings listed across 2027 and 2028 may not yet have full cabin pricing or confirmed inclusions. If something on this page catches your eye, it’s worth enquiring early, as deployment decisions and ship assignments can shift, particularly for newer seasons.

Plan Your Stay in Perth

Perth Hotels
If you’re arriving the night before, stay in Fremantle – it’s a short walk to the terminal and there’s plenty to do for dinner and a morning stroll. Got a few extra days up your sleeve? Perth CBD is worth exploring first, then move down to Freo before you sail. We can help you sort accommodation that works around your departure.
Shore Excursions
Western Australia has some genuinely spectacular day trips on its doorstep. A guided tour through the Swan Valley, a wine tasting run down to Margaret River, or a whale watching trip out of Fremantle are all worth considering before you set sail.
Cruise Transfers
Perth Airport is about 40 minutes from the terminal by road. With luggage in tow, a pre-booked door-to-door transfer makes a lot more sense than piecing together public transport.

What Awaits Along the Way

Exmouth
Your gateway to Ningaloo Reef, one of the few places on earth where you can snorkel alongside whale sharks directly from the shore. Depending on the season, manta rays and humpback whales are also in the mix.
Broome
Cable Beach stretches for 22 kilometres of white sand, and a camel ride along it at sunset is as good as it sounds. Broome’s pearling history and multicultural past make the town itself worth exploring too.
Kimberley Coast
Ancient gorges, tidal waterfalls, and red rock coastline that most Australians will never see any other way. Small expedition ships can access places larger vessels simply can’t reach.
Darwin
The cruise terminal drops you less than a kilometre from the city centre, and Darwin’s WWII history alone makes a port day here worthwhile. A jumping crocodile cruise on the Adelaide River is the quintessential Top End experience.
Cairns
Cairns is your best chance to get out on the Great Barrier Reef, with dozens of snorkel and dive tours departing daily. If you’d rather stay dry, the rainforest village of Kuranda up in the ranges behind town is a good alternative.
Airlie Beach
The jumping-off point for the Whitsundays, and a single day here is enough to reach Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet lookout. The silica sand really does look like that in real life.

FAQs for Cruises Around Australia from Perth

  1. Do these cruises return to Perth, or do I disembark somewhere else?
Most itineraries on this page are one-way, finishing in Brisbane, or Sydney, so you’ll need to organise a flight home at the end. Full circumnavigations that return to Fremantle do exist but are less common and tend to book out well in advance.
  2. Do I need a passport for a cruise around Australia?
For a purely domestic sailing visiting only Australian ports, a current driver’s licence or government-issued photo ID is sufficient for Australian residents. If your itinerary takes the ship outside Australian coastal waters at any point, you will need a passport. Check the specific requirements for your chosen sailing before you book, as rules can differ slightly between cruise lines.
  3. How many sea days should I expect on a cruise from Perth that goes around Australia?
Quite a few, and it’s worth knowing before you book. Perth’s isolation means meaningful stretches of open ocean between ports, and on a typical 17-night sailing you might have five to seven full days at sea. Most passengers settle into the rhythm quickly, but if you strongly prefer port-heavy itineraries, a Queensland-based departure may suit you better.
  4. Which cruise lines sail around Australia from Fremantle?
Princess Cruises is the most consistent operator on this route, with Sapphire Princess and Grand Princess regularly featuring Fremantle departures. Seabourn also runs Australian circumnavigations that include Fremantle. For Kimberley-specific expedition sailings, Ponant and Coral Expeditions operate smaller vessels that access more remote areas. Ship deployments change season to season, so verify current schedules before booking.
  5. What is the best time of year to cruise from Perth heading north?
The Kimberley season runs roughly May to October during the dry season, and this is the most popular window for northern sailings from Fremantle. Conditions are clear, the sea is generally calm, and wildlife activity is at its best. The wet season from November to April brings heat, humidity, and occasional cyclone risk in the north, which can affect port access.
  6. Do I need travel insurance for a cruise around Australia?
Yes, and standard domestic travel insurance often won’t cut it. You’ll want a policy with specific cruise cover that includes onboard medical expenses, medical evacuation, and missed port cover. The cost of being medically evacuated from a remote northern port without cover can be significant, and Medicare doesn’t apply once you’re at sea.
  7. Can I book just a sector of a longer itinerary, say Perth to Darwin, rather than the full sailing?
Sometimes, yes. Cruise lines occasionally allow passengers to join or leave longer voyages at intermediate ports, known as a sector booking. Availability depends on the specific sailing and how the cruise line manages the route. Ask us about this option if you have limited leave and only want to cover the northern WA and Top End leg.
  8. How far in advance should I book a cruise around Australia from Perth?
Earlier than most people expect. Kimberley season sailings can sell out six to twelve months ahead, and balcony cabins on full circumnavigations often go sooner. If you have a specific sailing or cabin type in mind for 2027 or 2028, it’s worth locking it in now rather than waiting.
  9. Is a cruise around Australia from Perth suitable for solo travellers? It can be, though cabin pricing is worth checking early. Some lines offer dedicated solo cabins at or near the standard per-person rate, while others charge a single supplement that adds meaningfully to the cost. Longer sailings tend to attract a sociable crowd and sea days give plenty of opportunity to meet fellow passengers. Let us know your situation and we can point you toward the lines with the best current solo policies.
